Luca catchall post - Fun vileblood issues!
Who: Luca Paguro and open!
What: Luca's memory flashback, as well as generally sneaking around the Disaster House/Town/getting caught in snares because he's a vileblood and there's two blood types hunting him this month
When: Throughout the month
Where: The Disaster House or anywhere in the Trench
Content Warnings: A thirteen year old boy getting hunted like an animal, both in his memory and in the 'present day' prompts
Luca's Memory – Trying to escape Ercole (OTA)
Whoever touches the Winter Mourning will find themselves witnessing a hunt. Maybe they'll see out of Luca's eyes, a passive observer forced to make the same choices he made, or maybe they'll take on the role of someone else in the setting. Alberto, perhaps, or one of the people trying to catch Luca. Maybe they'll even be able to do their own things, make their own choices.
Regardless, the memory starts with Luca and Alberto in sea monster form racing through the streets on a bike. They're terrified, desperate. Ercole has gotten in front of them, but the hill's too steep to try and turn back and go up. Besides, they need to get back to the water to be safe, and to do that, they need to pass Ercole. Luca stares in horror as he keeps pedaling forward, and Ercole lifts his spear, ready to throw.
"You should have left when I told you. Now...I'm going to kill some sea monsters!" Ercole says, and his cackles fill the alley as he balances on his bike, his spear raised in the air.
Then, just in time, Giulia, a red headed girl who had caught up on her own bike, rams her bike in to Ercole's own, sending both of them tumbling to the ground. Luca and Alberto race past on their bike, but Luca glances back. Giulia bounces roughly on the cobblestones several time, rolling down the steep and rocky pathway.
"No!" Cries Luca.
"Giulia!" Alberto calls out to her.
Not willing to just leave her like that, not knowing if she's okay, Luca stops the bike and he and Alberto race over to her, helping her up. This was a mistake. They're surrounded now. Many of the townsfolk are just standing there, watching to see what happens next. Others seem more ready to participate in this hunt. Some have harpoons. Some have nets. They whisper.
"Look at that," says one villager.
"You're not going anywhere," says another.
Ercole, however, is quick to call dibs. "Guys! I saw them first! The reward is mine!"
Luca tries to be brave. "We're not afraid of you!"
"No," responds Ercole, "But we're afraid of you. Everyone is horrified and disgusted by you, because you are monsters."
The memory may end here. Or it may continue on for a few more seconds, so the viewer sees Giulia saying that they aren't monsters, and Massimo coming out of the crowd to tell them that the boys are Luca and Alberto. Either way, the memory wraps up soon unless the viewer is an active participant and was able to make a different choice in the course of events.
The Disaster House – Open to anyone who would be at/around the Disaster House
Luca's skittish. He's been hunted before, he knows the feeling. He knows the mortal terror, the constant hiding, the fear of discovery. The worst part is, this month even people he loved and trusted seem to be turning on him. Nowhere is safe. But this house...it's still home.
He sticks to the shadows, staying out of sight, easily startled if anyone spots him. Still, there are times he lets his guard down. Enamored with all the pretty antler decorations around the house, Luca decides to make his own. He takes a couple of antlers he's found tying them up with ribbons and decorating them with little twigs and springs from the greenhouse. At one point he even starts having enough fun with his crafting to relax enough to hum a little tune, enjoying himself as he pretties up the antlers, holding them up to see how they're coming.
Other times he can be found grabbing things from the greenhouse or the kitchen to eat. He doesn't know how to cook, though, and this month...this month he's too scared to find someone around the house to help him, so he might just start eating raw ingredients as is just to avoid coming out of hiding.
Out And About – OTA
But of course, living in a household with all bloodtypes can be quite stressful to a young boy during a season where he's doomed to be hunted by two of them, so he ends up spending quite a bit of time away from the house this month. Of course, he heeds the warnings he's been given about cold weather and bundles up. A dark grey wool coat, gloves, boots, a hat...dressed up as well as he can be as he heads out into the harsh winter.
Still, as unused as he is to this sort of winter weather, Luca does stop to marvel at the snow. It really is pretty, and he never imagined it looking quite like that. He stomps it down to crunch it, squeezes it in his hands, experimenting and examining it, fascinated...until he hears anyone else coming by.
Like a prey animal, he's likely to hurry off to cower in the nearest hiding spot, before staring in horror at the obvious tracks he's left in the snow.
Trapped – OTA
Luca is trying to be careful, staying out of sight, avoiding other people and obvious traps. Not all traps are obvious, though, and there are so many this month that he's bound to get caught at some point.
He panics when he feels the snare tighten around his leg, pulling him up. He struggles, and he wants to scream, but he doesn't dare to. He's helpless now in a place filled with people who want to hunt him. If he wrong person comes...he has no hope of survival. They'll just slaughter him right there. He has to get himself down.
He can't get himself down, he soon realizes. He can't get up to his leg. He can't do anything here. Tears well up in his eyes, and he wants to cry, but he's too terrified to be anything but silent. He'll die if anyone sees him...and he'll likely die here if they don't.

Disaster House
"Luca. What are you doing."
Luz has come downstairs, tired. She's been doing another bout of meditation since she's been trying to keep her corruption down, but heard some clatter downstairs so naturally she went to investigate.
"You know, you can cook some of that stuff, and if you don't know how, I can show you, right?"
no subject
"I..." he looks down at what he was eating. Handfuls of beans and mushrooms. There's even an egg sitting out, but fortunately he hasn't gotten to attempting to eat that. "I didn't want to bother anyone."
And lately a whole lot of people around the Trench have seemed uncharacteristically bothered by him, so he really hadn't wanted to ask for help. Of course, Luca doesn't really know how to cook at all. Growing up, cooking wasn't really a thing. Sure, preparing food was. Wrapping things up in seaweed, chopping them up, stuff like that, but in the end it was all raw sea creatures and seaweed that didn't take much preparation, and what preparation it did have, Luca wasn't generally involved with.
no subject
"Ok, first of all? Those beans are raw. You have to have them soaking, like, overnight before you can even cook them. The mushrooms are edible but if you don't cook them? They are going to taste awful. And just an egg? How are you even going to cook it? I've never seen you do that."
She shook her head. "Luca, I know I've...kinda been stewing in my own stuff, but I'd never let you go hungry. Why would you go and do this all by yourself?"

( the disaster house )
Are you hungry, Luca?
no subject
I am, yeah. But I don't really know how to cook, and I didn't want to bother anyone, so...
[So he was stuck eating handfuls of raw ingredients.]

Trapped
Perhaps there is at least one sigh of relief Luca might be able to have, because the voice that cuts through the silence is Zib's. And rather than sounding pleased about Luca getting caught, he actually sounds annoyed.
Unlike a lot of people who have given him reason (he thinks) to be paranoid of, Luca had been one of the few that had still seemed alright. So to see him in trouble like this... it does actually manage to concern him this time too, rather than allowing his paranoia to think that Luca must have been here to try to sneak up on him.
"Do you need help getting down?"
no subject
A rush of relief floods through him. He'd been so terrified, so convinced that he was doomed to just hang here, suspended, until whoever set this trap came to collect their prize.
"I'm so glad you're here! And yeah, I really do need help!"
no subject
Lately, he has started to feel more like "Zib" than "Dib". Could he ever really say he was the latter anymore?
But, he forces himself not to think about that train of thought right now, instead focusing on his friend Luca. (And despite the rampant paranoia, he can in fact still think of Luca as a "friend" without feeling too unsure with the word.)
"Okay. Hold still."
His PAK springs to life, a blade swinging out to cut Luca free. However, before Luca can potentially fall and land on his head from being cut down so abruptly, another metal appendage comes out in the form of a metallic hand to try to catch Luca before he can hit the ground. Once the trap has been completely cut through and Luca should be considered free, the metal hand will gently set Luca down to stand on solid ground again.

out and about
By the end of December, though, all those old feelings are rushing back. Fire's coursing through his veins and he can't rest, can't focus, just keeps chasing the next rush. In some ways, that can be helpful; a lot of the time, he gets distracted before he can seriously hurt his target. But in other ways...well, it's all just feeding his corruption. Claws are beginning to sprout from his twitching hands, and even his fleeting attention is getting to be dangerous.
It's a flash of movement that catches his attention. Stalking over, the footprints in the snow just confirm that someone's around. Michael tilts his head and looks around, fingers jittering at his sides.]
Who's there~?

Trapped
Along with hidden snare traps, he had left out obvious ones as well, aware a beast or person would step around them in a particular pattern. And so he had found his fair share of success.
He turned his head at the snap and wind of wire against bark, indicating that another had been caught in the trap. He ghosted his way along tree branches, letting snow be knocked off by his boots now and again as he closed the distance. He took his time, perhaps building the terror if it was a Sleeper and letting a beast struggle if they didn't notice.
Then he came upon Luca hanging there as he teleported to the tree in question, and he eased into a crouch, tapping a shotgun against his knee as he considered. For the last few weeks, he hadn't been in Disaster House as he had been told to leave by Fern. Now he was fully recovered from his death, and he watched little Luca swing and cry.
Behind his mask, he bit his lower lip, shaking his head as an old image of Arthur with tears streaming over forehead because of a leg caught in the V of two branches. Reyes had gone to save the boy then.]
You shouldn't be out here. It's dangerous. [He growled even as he stood.]

Memories like the corners of my miiiiind
"Hey! Why are you picking on them? They're just kids?"
He doesn't look far from a monster himself now- not with the stony skin growing all over him and anger flashes in his eyes as he gets between Ercole and the boys. He doesn't know if he can stop the memory, but he can't stand around and just watch, either.
"Maybe you should take a look at...at who's the real monster here."
no subject
"Yes, yes I see," says Ercole, not getting Varian's point in the least, "You're a much more impressive monster than they are. I wonder if I'll get an even better prize if I turn in your body with the other two?"
Of course, Luca realizes. If humans offer a 300,000 lira reward for dead sea monsters, of course they'd offer something for...well, rock monsters? Whatever this guy was. Sure, there weren't any posters advertising rewards for dead rock monsters like the ones for sea monsters, but that's probably only because there had been more sea monster sightings. If Varian were to look around the town, he might even spot one of these posters among the murals and other imagery of humans killing sea monsters. There was even a fountain nearby depicting this.
Ercole readies his spear, and seems to be preparing to drive it through Varian.
"Um...sir? I think he's really going to do it!" Luca cries out, trying to warn the mysterious stranger before he gets himself hurt.

Ercole is a huge jerk
That agitation pretty much gets thrown out the window when Fern inadvertently sees the memory of the race, and the townsfolk with nets and harpoons, and it ends right as Ercole tells the two boys that they're monsters.
Wow. This feels familiar.
The memory fades and Fern is left blinking in confusion, his brain trying to catch up with everything. He's sitting in the living room of the house, on the couch, and not in Italy. Just in Trench.
"Uh... wow. Geez," he mutters, shaking his head.
no subject
Of course, this month he knows Fern's been acting weird around him, too, so he knows he's not the only one affected here. His first thought when he hears Fern speak was that something was wrong. And knowing how things have been going this month, he half wonders if it's something he did, even though he'd only just walked into the room.
"Um...is something wrong?"

Ercole is going to get beaten
"Hey! Since when did one big nose, loudmouth jerk speak for everyone in the village? In fact, when did going to help a girl who got hurt make you a monster? And I heard you, yelling about a reward! Is that what you guys prize around here, over helping out kids? Money for capturing those different from you?"
Luz stood erect, and stared Ercole down.
"You ought to be ashamed. You're nothing more than a bully."
no subject
Luca, Giulia and Alberto are grateful for the intervention, but just continue to glare at Ercole. They're not surprised by this revelation. This isn't news for them. Some of the people in the crowd look ashamed of their reaction to the boys, others still look like they might be interested in the prize. Ercole, of course, looks just as eager as ever, only seeing Luz as an obstacle.
Ercole continues, "Besides, look at them? If they aren't monsters, then what are they, then? Hm?"

Memory Times
(She's seen scales like that before, she realises—)
Though she's trapped in someone else's body, Rose feels a horror blossoming as some of the people lift their weapons, as the energy of the crowd ripples, some of it fearful, others... angry.
And she recognises the voice of one of the creatures; she doesn't need to be told who that is. It's Luca. Rose watches, helpless as the older-looking boy, Ercole, speaks. '—but we're afraid of you. Everyone is horrified and disgusted by you, because you are monsters.'
She hears the word whispered through the crowd around her, monster, monster and sometimes, more specifically... sea monster. Like it's a word they all know, some taboo, frightening thing.
That's when the memory ends, and she's left trembling in the living room of her home, where she's holding her Winter Mourning.
Rose blinks, open-mouthed and stunned for only a few short moments, before she's scrabbling immediately to her feet, grabbing her coat. She knows where Luca lives; in her searches for her daughter, she was told about a few houses where young folks have congregated together, and she means to go find him now.
no subject
The only difference he sees was that for the little girl, the people who wanted to help her came too late, but for him and Alberto, Massimo came just in time. If he hadn't, Luca and Alberto would have been hurt horribly or even have been killed as well. He might not know this little girl, but he hears the name. Rose. He knows whose memory this is.
This is all a lot to take in, so Luca heads out, wanting to walk and get some fresh air, and starts heading to the beach. Even though it's too cold to swim, he always prefers the beach. He doesn't get anywhere near it before he steps in another snare trap.
He's still scared, just like he was the previous times, though now he's quite a bit annoyed as well. This is getting frustrating. He struggles and kicks and swings back and forth, trying to get himself down, but isn't really making any progress.
"Oh, come on!"

in which ercole is a ho
his features twist into a painful grimace. he’s been having ups and downs in his emotional stability this month, mostly because he died and figured his mental faculties were still recovering from squid mode, mostly for being a paleblood. either way, he listened to the words (monster) and found his heart aching too easily.
he’s heard those words directed to him, too. he knows this pain. ]
He’s not . . .

[Ercole responds.] Oh? Then who are they, then?
[And that is when a massive man, pulling one of the harpoons out of the hands of one of the people surrounding Luca and Alberto, emerges from the crowd. Luca, Alberto and Giulia look hesitant, uncertain of what this man is going to do. Nervous.]

Memory - Escaping Ercole (sorry this is so late aaah)
When she sees Luca and Alberto racing through the streets on their bike, she's alarmed and throws herself out of the way, having never seen a bicycle before. But after she recovers from her brief shock, she goes to follow them anyway, trying to keep out of sight since she doesn't yet realize that this is a memory and nobody in it will actually notice her.
She catches up in time to see Guilia ram her bike into Ercole's, and Luca and Alberto stopping to help her. She still keeps herself hidden, but when she hears Ercole call Luca and his friend "monsters", that pushes a button. Growling to herself, Mebh steps out of her hiding place. She knows what it's like to be thought of as a monster, and while she does take some pride in being able to scare away any intruders, hearing the word used in such a way isn't something she'll stand for.
"They're not monsters, townie! Leave 'em alone!"
But despite her attempt to stand up to these people...none of them seem to hear her.
"Huh...?"
It's okay, sorry it took so long to reply back
The girl who Luca and Alberto helped up steps forward, yelling, "They're not monsters!"
"Oh?" Asks Ercole, "Oh? Then who are they, then? Hm?"
At the same time, a massive one armed man takes a harpoon from one of the people surrounding the kids and pushes his way through the crowd. Luca and Alberto turn to the man, looking at him hesitantly, unsure of what was going to happen next, and afraid that the man that had been looking after them for the past few days would turn on them know that he knows what they are.
