Thankfully, this early in the month, this corruption is only a grey tinge to his skin, but he still hesitates to come too close. ]
Uh...h-hey. Are you okay? [He shoots a glance at the pictures on the shore- faces he doesn't recognise, but he can make a good guess mean something to the boy. Good job, detective Varian. ] Are...are you new? Do you need help?
no subject
I got them, [ he looks up to offer the older boy an acknowledging glance— complete with a bright red nose and pink-tipped ears to go along with the shimmer in his eyes. ] thanks.
[ a better look at falco would show that he was more equipped than a new sleeper would be: about two layers of fabric for the cold, and underneath the flaps of his outer cloak shell is a knife, a small firearm, and the neck of a rifle at his feet in the sand. ]
I was just— [ he shrugs, to find the answer, and ends up sniffing hard, ] walking around . . . And found these.
no subject
Hey, that's...okay. I think the ships out there have been dropping things from home into the water. Makes about as much sense as anything else in this place, right?
[He moves to sit next to him- the motion a little awkward with his prosthetic leg, but he gets down. ]
You uh... you want to talk about it? I'm Varian. By the way.
no subject
[ he’s still mildly surprised and processing that a young man has actually— sat by him and asked. his missing limb doesn’t go unnoticed either, but falco makes sure his gaze doesn’t linger too much there and goes right for the face. his hazel eyes might be just a tad wider than normal, but that’s soon to settle when he holds the first frame between them enough to share. he’s pointing to the neared man, first. ]
That’s Chief Deputy Braun. And that’s my, um, [ he points to the girl being held by him, and hilariously, his voice cracks. ] friend.
[ the most awkward giveaway. ]
I got these last Christmas in the other place I was in. I didn’t think I’d see them again.
no subject
[He means that sincerely. He's not the most personable of people here, but he's not completely hopeless. He appreciates the lack of staring, he's pretty used to the leg by now, but he's never comfortable when a big deal is made of it.
In turn, Varian doesn't draw attention to the voice crack. Fair's fair. ]
Sounds like they're important to you. [His head cants.] Like...another kidnapping world? I uh...I've heard of those.
no subject
he nods, either way, and presses his lips together. yeah, they were important. the brief gaze settled on the picture turns quick to the elder boy at the mention, before he pulls another frame to the top. ]
What kinds did you hear about?
no subject
Nothing really detailed. Only that some people here experienced them before. There was one that was a big house? Like...Wonderland? Alice in Wonderland kind of deal.
no subject
[ cal-li-for-ni-a, separated and not really native to his tongue. he’s read about alice, though, in south sister’s library, and has seen plenty of it spoken of in school, in Santa rosita. nowhere near home, though. ]
And now . . . Trench. [ he can’t his head and breathes out. ] I don’t know what to think of it, yet.
no subject
[He thinks some of his friends here have mentioned that place.]
Trench. Before this it was Deerington- I was there, in the dream, if anyone's told you about that. I'm not sure about this place either, yet.
no subject
Yeah, it’s America. It sounds like there are different Californias, too.
[ deerington . . . he’s heard about it. ]
If Deerington was a dream . . . Does that mean you’ve always been here?
no subject
That wouldn't surprise me. There seems to be multiple Earths.
[Something that took him a while to get his head around. At the question, he shakes shrugs.]
I guess so? This is apparently the waking world that Deerington was part of? Not that we were aware of this place, just the dream and it looked very, very different to this place.
no subject
What was it like? [ he sort of realizes only after the fact, and gently backpedals. ] If you don’t mind talking about it—
no subject
I don't mind at all. In fact, I've got whole folders full of information on it, if you ever wanna read up on it. [He's glad THEY made it over with him.] It was a town- much smaller than this place, but more...well, for me it was futuristic but less so for most people. It was apparently like 1950's America, if that means anything to you?
no subject
the year, on the other hand . . . ]
It was 1961 in Santa Rosita . . . But I’m from farther back from both of those. Year 854.
no subject
Off, I feel how that is. You're further back than even me. I'm...around 1820...something. It's been a while, it's harder to keep track of the dates. [He offers a wry smile.] Guess you know what it's like to be dumped into a world that's so far ahead in the future to you, it might as well be the space age, huh?
no subject
I was lost for a while, but a lot of people showed me around. I think Trench might be closest to what I’m used to out of them all.
[ speaking of, ]
Do you know what movies are? And emojis?
[ yes. of course he’s going to ask, these things are awesome to talk about, and you know? since he knew what they were now and got the experience, he didn’t want to miss out on being able to share it. ]
no subject
[And with that one question, Falco cements himself firmly in a position as someone Varian needs to be friends with. Congratulations. 'Tis both a blessing and a curse. Varian nods eyes wide. ]
Yes! Oh my god, people really love those things! Especially emmojis! And memes!!! Did they teach you about memes, because I still feel like I only understand them vaguely.
no subject
They’re jokes, right? I don’t get some of them, but I’ve seen Minions? [ HE SAID IT— ] They’re pretty funny.
[ he’s going to try drawing one in the sand with a finger, now . . . this is cursed. ]
no subject
I think so yeah! I managed to send a chess one to my friend and he said it was funny when he finally got it. But he doesn't understand chess so well. His girlfriend loved it though.
[As WEIRD as it is to find comfort in Luna enjoying something he did. He frowns, watching Falco draw. ]
I've not seen those that... is that some kind of pill with legs?
no subject
I’ve always thought they were fruit? All they talk about are bananas.
[ which is— kind of funny?? he doesn’t actually laugh about it, but falco does have a cute little endearing smile on his face as he does his worst: pluck out his omni for the first time in a few days, and looks for videos in the dark section of the media library.
there’s no going back now, but he’s sharing his view with varian, in case he wants to choose something. ]
no subject
Huh. Bananas- well, I guess that tracks.
[Look, he's dating a sentient pile of grass that happens to be boy-shaped. Fruit people aren't that big of a stretch in all honesty.
He peers over at Falco's omni and...oh, wow.]
Uhhhh whatcha got there, Bud?
no subject
Videos— I’ll send you one so you have more memes to send to your friends.
[ they’re settling on this one playing. ]
no subject
Varian leans in to watch the videos with a fixed, confused smile on his face. What the holy heck is happening to him right now?]
Wow, there- well, there sure are a lot of them.
no subject
They look so real . . . [ he’s realized too, that he actually chuckled, and broke out of his cold spot. ] Thank you.
no subject
Hah, they do. [His smile softens a little.] For what? Watching some videos? No problem.
