He suppresses a slight twinge of anxiety when this person doesn't give the slightest indication of backing off. It's the old feeling of being picked on. He knows it doesn't make sense any more, and he kicked the habit of flinching. He can only truly be hurt in other ways now. Harm to a friend, for example.

He sees this person is also a man of culture friendship.

"One of your friends? Oh--you mean Rose-san?" That was the page he was on before it was taken from him. His smile becomes more solid. "She knows she's in there. Watched me write stuff down. I'm in training to become a Pro Hero, and she reminds me of the ones back home. Don't know what a shovel talk is, though...?"

Glitch looks at Izuku with almost a conspiratorial paranoia. Maybe he was telling the truth, maybe he should give them the benefit of the doubt. But, Trench and Deer have made him ten times more wary and losing the arm didn't help either.

Though as a show of good faith he does hold the notebook back out to Izuku to take it. He's not about to set it on fire and throw it in a fountain after all. What kind of asshole does that?

"We live together so, yeah. We're friends. As for the shovel talk? It means if you are like secretly fucking evil and are planning evil crime stuff it means I hit you with a shovel." Flat and to the point.

He seems on edge. Midoriya takes his notebook back before this person can change his mind and act like a turbo asshole, the kind who definitely takes his stuff and throws it in a fountain. Seriously, who does that?

"Thank you." ...For giving him back what was rightfully his in the first place. Baby steps, Midoriya.

So that's what shovel talk means. It's fortunate that Midoriya isn't into "evil crime stuff." Or plain old crime. He'll just never mention that police coverup. This will be fine.

"I'm not. You can ask Rose-san. No shovels necessary," he assures him.
