Crenshaw - outside her home
When outside, despite the lack of sunshine, she can be found either out front or in the small backyard with her omen, a young Giraffe, seated just off to the side of her. She's carefully digging up dead plants, setting them to the side, and replacing them with seeds or starters of live ones- whatever she's managed to trade for in town. It's tedious work for just one Eternal, but she doesn't mind it too much. There's a calming sort of feeling to working with her hands, making minimal use of her powers except to water the plants once buried.
Everything feels a bit hazy, like she was just going through the motions... she doesn't like it, especially after spending much of the previous month in pain.
"I think we're done for the day, Paloma," she sighs as she dusts off her hands and glances over at the giraffe. "Shall we take a walk?"
[ ooc; catch her while she's working on her yard or about to head out for her walk! or anywhere in between ]

When she came closer to Sersi's house, Lexi saw her hard at work in her garden. Lexi didn't know the first thing about gardening other than to occasionally prune the hedges because no one else would. But that was home, here was entirely somewhere else.
So she smiled as Orville, on his usual spot on Lexi's right shoulder, made little excited noises. She reached up to pat him gently] No, Orville, you can't burrow around in this garden. You do just fine with my backyard. [then she waved at Sersi, smiling broadly]
Hey! Looks like you're hard at work. Mind an, uh...I've never actually gardened before. But I can cheer you on and get water for you if you need it?
no subject
Lexi, it's good to see you again. [ She shifted a little to face her easier and dusted off her hands. ] I could teach you, if you'd like? Though I'm not sure how much good will come from all of this right now... I don't know if the moonshine is enough to help the plant life here, or if I should have waited for the sun to rise again.
Or... I'd be happy to take a break if you'd like to join me for some tea.
no subject
Honestly, I have no idea. I've never done much more than prune the hedges at my house back home. I've never actually tried gardening or stuff like that.
And let's take a break, it looks like you've been going for a long time. It's too easy to get exhausted that way.
no subject
[ Standing up, she brushed the dirt from her knees and gestured to the door of her home. ] A break sounds wonderful. I hope you don't mind that it's a little messy- but I do have some drinks stocked in the kitchen... and it's brighter in there than out here.
[ Inside doesn't look quite as nice yet, but she has been working on it whenever she's not outside working on the yard. ]
no subject
and her home looks adorable from the outside] No, it's cool, I don't mind a mess. If I did, I never could have shared a room with my sister as long as I have. And yes, brightness. It's wild how I took ordinary sunshine for granted.
[it's fine. Lexi's house is kind of over decorated because she saw maximalist interior design on Pinterest and fell in love]
no subject
[ She opens the door to let her in first, then follows her. ] I'm sure we all took the sunshine for granted- but then again it never occurred to me that we could lose it for so long so easily.
no subject
she goes in, looking around at the decorations] Yeah. The whole thing makes me wonder. I know that sometimes in Alaska there would be times without daylight for a long time. It sort of makes me wonder if something happened to tilt the Earth on its axis?
no subject
[ The unspoken question: have you been granted powers from your bloodtype?
She's happy to let Lexi look around while she moves to the kitchen to pull out some cups and plates. ]
I feel like we have the sort of people here who could tell us if that were the case... [ She frowns a little and sets the dishes down on the table before moving to the refrigerator and pulling out a carafe of iced tea. ] It might be that we're hoping science has an answer to something that is simply just... magical in nature.
Is iced tea alright?
no subject
[she has, but she's only gotten one of them to work and that was a total fluke borne of panic. she's spent an hour staring at her Omni, trying to move it with her mind, Orville snuffling reassuringly on her shoulder.
she loves the chance to have a look around at the houses of other people, the vast majority of her time has been spent in the Howards' split-level which was decorated in the late nineties and hasn't been updated since]
Maybe? Probably. Someone would have thought to check the constellations, right? [and she watches curiously] Well, magic would explain why we're squids when we show up here? And how we apparently have total blood transfusions with no needle marks? Mine's weird, it's like black glitter.
Yeah! Yeah, that's fine.
so sorry for the delay!
[ Sersi already has enough on her plate, she thinks, with the powers she was created with. She doesn't really need to add anything else to the mix- and apparently this place thought the same thing and neglected to give her a blood type that would be anything interesting.
With the tea in hand, she grabs a couple of pastries she bought in town and walks back over to the table to set everything down. ]
Magic could very well answer most of this place's mysteries... I'm afraid mine isn't anything as exciting as yours.
it's okay! RL and such happen and are > RP!
[for Lexi, super-powers were something out of one of her dad's comic books. or out of a movie. she wants desperately to explore her new abilities, but they seem to really do a number on someone else's mind, which she was afraid of trying unless someone else was really, truly okay with it.
and ooooh, is that a chocolate croissant she sees?]
Really? But yours, I'm sure what you can do is really cool?
no subject
History's full of little nuggets like that- [ Get it? Gold? Nuggets? She smiles a little at her own joke.
That absolutely is a chocolate croissant. ] But you're right, it's nice to have actual proof that something is achievable.
[ Sersi blinks a little at the insistence that her blood and powers are just as cool- she smiles a little and shakes her head. ] I'm what they call a warmblood here. No powers gifted from my squid transformation unfortunately.
[ She pauses, almost as though considering if she should reveal her powers from home, but the honest truth is that she hasn't been hiding them... she just hasn't been flaunting them. ]
I do have some from home, though: matter transmutation. So it's not like I'm completely without powers of some sort.
no subject
and she got it, giggling] Preferably those made of real gold.
[yay!] Yeah. And, I don't know...I've always been good at school, maybe a little too good because I still have no idea what I'll major in in college. And I know I still have plenty of time, but I'm in all of the AP classes and the teachers are already putting on some pressure.
[and she looks curious] Really? I hadn't heard about that.
[it's fascinating to hear about that] Matter...transmutation? So, changing it from one thing into another thing?
no subject
[ But when it turns to her powers she already has... Sersi nods her head a little before looking around for something to use for an example-
A napkin. She picks it up and holds it carefully in her hands before changing it from the paper to a small pile of rose petals. ] Yes- exactly that.
no subject
[which she's entirely unsure about. what does she have to offer? other than knowing how to keep one's head down and try to avoid the worst of the worst. and hide within herself to the point where she had trouble defining who she was as a person.
and Lexi makes a little delighted noise at watching what Sersi can do] That is so cool.
no subject
The reaction to her powers makes Sersi smile even more as she passes the rose petals over to the girl. ] Here, these should help you barter for some things. I'm grateful that I came here with my powers in tact... as I think they're beneficial to improving the quality of life here. In small ways, but sometimes it's small steps that make the greatest impact.
no subject
she takes them eagerly, lifting them up for a good sniff first] Yeah. Definitely! Books. Books and comics and manga. I'm trying to open a used bookstore. For a combination of a quality of life thing because every town needs a bookstore and because the library doesn't exactly have, I don't know, "Interview with the Vampire." And your powers are really, really cool. I've never heard of anyone being able to do that, at least not for real. Movies, yes, real life? No way.
no subject
Quality of life, especially somewhere like here, is very important... Do you need any help setting up?
[ She smiles a little bashfully. ] Thank you, really. Powers are... well, they're not common but they're not uncommon back on my Earth. Lots of superheroes.
no subject
and that offer takes Lexi by surprise] Yeah. Yeah, sure! There's going to be a lot of work to get the store ready, especially since it's going to be in a house, not like a Barnes & Noble or anything. And, um...I'm going to need a couple of employees since I plan for it to be open seven days a week?
[and Lexi grins] Well, they're completely uncommon where I come from. It's all stuff out of pop culture.
no subject
I'd love to help with set up... and while I don't know that I'm the best candidate for employment, if you're ever in a pickle? I'd be more than happy to help with a shift here or there.
[ She laughs a little. ] I think there's quite a bit of it in our pop culture too... the only difference is it also shows up in our non-fiction and documentaries.
no subject
That would be so great, thank you. I really appreciate any help I can get for anything.
Wow. It sounds so cool, that not only are super-powers a thing where you're from, they get documentaries. I'm trying to imagine Richard Attenborough narrating one and it's such a wild thing to imagine.

And during this darkness, he attempts to train his bloodhound further everyday. The massive dog is not easy to tame and often does what it wants; no matter how much Kaneki reads about it on books, the animal still fights being on a leash and will take every chance to start running... and drag Kaneki behind.
Which is indeed what is happening here. The hound is dragging Kaneki who tries to pull the leash to stop it, but in vain. At least he manages to stop the dog from going right through Sersi's newly planted garden, tugging at it hard enough so it finally stops, panting loudly as it stares at the woman. And Kaneki of course, realizes what could have happened and he is very quick to bow his head as an apology.
"I'm sorry! I'm still learning to control him!"
no subject
"It's alright- there's no harm done," she assures him with a bright smile. It only takes her half a beat longer to recall his name. "Kaneki, right? How long have you had him?"
no subject
The hound doesn't seem interested in destroying anyone's garden today, at least, but the moment it catches Kaneki off guard, it suddenly tugs the leash and starts running the opposite direction. The boy doesn't have much of a chance this time and the animal escapes the leash, leaving him to sigh.
"... again." again. This happens a lot.
no subject
And she means that very sincerely. Especially when the hound decides now is the most opportune time to make a break for it. She stops herself from laughing- she can only imagine how frustrating it has to be to be training such a strong willed creature...
Sersi stands up and brushes her hands off on her jeans. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
no subject
But he smiles next and shakes his head "They are irreverent and do what they want. But it's good to keel bloodhounds around, they eat blood pollution." So perhaps the dog darted off to do exactly that, and Kaneki can't blame it for that.
But he glances back at Sersi's house with a bigger smile and a nod. "I'm glad you are settling in, Sersi-san."
so sorry for the delay!
She looks from where the hound ran off to, back to Kaneki. It's impossible not to smile brightly- even with this place being as strange and haunting as it is, she's still finding the beauty in connections with others.
"Thank you! I can only hope that we'll see the sun again soon enough, I'll admit the long night is starting to wear on me... How are you doing, apart from the very willful hound keeping you on your toes?"
event: Wonderkind, part 1 - there will be spoilers for Eternals
To be perfectly honest, Sersi hadn't been paying much attention to the portals. They were strange and unusual, but she hasn't had reason to inspect them much further just yet. She didn't want to get her hopes up, perhaps, when she'd heard that others were able to talk briefly to loved ones back home. If she didn't expect it, she couldn't be disappointed.
So to hear her name come from one she'd just passed made her pause. Paloma stopped in front of the portal, lowering her head to get a better look at the man on the other side, while Sersi stopped a few feet ahead.
"Is that a giraffe?"
Dane Whitman.
"Dane-" His name was breathed as soon as she returned to the portal to see him, a large smile on her face. "How are you?"
For what it's worth, however, Dane looked puzzled- though relieved to see her. "Well enough- but you know, I've been meaning to tell you: you should just say you don't want to move in with me- the whole being kidnapped thing was a bit dramatic."
"I was even kidnapped from being kidnapped... Does that earn me a few more points on the drama scale?" Sersi laughed and reached toward the portal, wishing she could reach through just to hold his hand. Something to assure her this was real. "I miss you."
event: Wonderkind, part 2
Sersi shouts as she sprints forward. It's the loudest she's been since arriving, a sense of urgency apparent in her tone. She's never been on the front line of fighting- as she wouldn't consider herself nearly as powerful as Thena, Ikaris, or Gilgamesh. She always in the support team, and always felt her powers lent themselves better to helping humans with their daily lives.
But now there's a Deviant in Trench and she's the only Eternal present.
"Get behind me, fast."
She looks around quickly as the creature, colorful and looking like a mythological creature made of nothing but a vibrant muscular structure, approaches them before she settles on kneeling and pressing her hands to the ground. Golden symbols blossom across the ground before vines erupt from the surface, wrapping around the creature's legs.
"That won't hold it for long... how fast can you run?" she breathes out, turning to face whoever she'd just bought some time for.
no subject
The question - the very obvious one - is cut off as V's optical implants try to keep up with what's going on, try to feed through to his neural network what exactly he's looking at. He understands the words 'get behind me' well enough, and there's a millisec that passes as he understands that maybe this woman's got some experience with... whatever the fuck this is.
Except then he watches her get to her knees, palms pressed to the ground, and suddenly he has no idea if she's praying or--
The vines answer that question for him.
"That was preem," he says, tone clearly awed and it's not the right time - when is it - but his optics zoom in on the vines that are restraining whatever creature it is in avid curiosity.
"Uh, fast. You?"
He'll defer to somebody else's expertise when he needs to without a hint of ego getting in the way, but he's also not going to leave anybody behind. He's far from defenseless so, if he's gotta run, he's expecting her to be joining him. Unless...
"I make good bait."
no subject
She didn't even hesitate for a moment to answer- she might not be a fighter, but it was still her mission to protect people from deviants. Sersi glances back at the struggling creature, then again at the man next to her.
More people here had experience with things like this than those back home. It might not hurt to accept help, especially since she's flying solo.
"I'm also fast... If we can get it to follow us to a less populated area, I can deal with it there. I can't let it hurt anyone."
no subject
The strategy is one that V can get behind - it makes a lot of sense. Draw the danger away from people who don't got the kind of cyber-augmentation he's got, or the powers this stranger's got. He doesn't need telling twice, even as he's grateful the stranger takes him at his word - he's more than good to help with this and needs to feel useful.
"We're not gonna let it hurt people. 'tween us we got this."
And maybe later he'll ask what exactly it is, but for now...
"Ready?"
no subject
Sersi doesn't have the time to argue that it's not his fight- she's sure the vines won't hold up for much longer. She presses her lips together firmly and nods, the action punctuated by the sound of one of the vines snapping.
"I'll be right behind you."
The rest of the vines begin to snap and her eyes widen a little before she nudges him. "Go- let's go now," she whispers urgently.
no subject
He looks over his shoulder more than once, not to see where the creature's at but to check the woman's still with him. Streaking past closed-tight doors in the darkness, anybody he comes across he's yelling at to get to safety. And then he tosses an important question over his shoulder, the sound of big limbs crashing into masonry not lost on him. This thing ain't giving up.
"How far we goin'?"
no subject
"If we can get out of the district- toward the beach, maybe?"
She's not even sure if they're going the right way to get there... but anything like it would do. The next question in her mind, however, was whether this deviant was more interested in her or others.
no subject
Hard to think about those nuanced points when he can practically visualize the creature's bulk just from the sound it makes when it runs. So the direction his new friend picked is the direction they're going and honestly it's a wonder V's gaze doesn't drift back over his shoulder in deep curiosity more often.
Is he terrified? Sure. But that sweet taste of adrenaline and feeling alive feels good in its own way. ]
Please move move move--
[ Is that an ice cream truck rolling to a stop in his path? He doesn't have time to really focus in on the menu, the cyberware he's got installed in his legs making the jump onto the truck's roof seem effortless. It's about then he turns around to chart his new friend's progress, and the creature still in hot pursuit.
The beach is tantalizingly close, and the giant plastic ice cream he rips off the top of the truck is for throwing, obviously, if the lady needs a distraction. ]
no subject
Now she gets to worry about the ice cream truck that's managed to wedge itself directly in their path. Eyes darting around, she took a moment to see if there was any easy way for her to move around, even as he was effortlessly jumping on top of it.
Of all the people to come across the deviant with her, she was grateful for someone that was clearly capable of holding his own. ]
Jump!
[ Maybe even throw that piece of plastic at the deviant, because it's going to look like Sersi's running face first into the vehicle. But with her hands out and touching the metal first, it dissolves into a flurry of light orchid petals. If she was going to destroy someone's livelihood, the least she could do was turn it into something that would fetch them whatever they needed to be able to trade for another.
Thankfully the driver had exited just before she did so- Sersi stops briefly to apologize urgently, offer assistance later, and to get them out of the way... and unless the deviant got distracted- they might have to start fighting it here. ]
no subject
Optics feeding her trajectory into his neural network, it's clear she's going to run right into the side of the truck, and V's instincts want him to yell out in warning. As if she hasn't seen it herself - 'course she has. The novelty jumbo ice cream decoration he pried from the top of the truck is still in hand as he lands neatly enough on the ground, petals drifting into his hair soon after. ]
What the-- DUCK!
[ The creature's maw splits open on approach and all V's got to hand is the fucking ice cream. An ice cream he voluntarily throws at those gaping jaws before it can close on anything fatally. ]
apologies for the delay!!
Eyes wide at how close the creature was now, Sersi breathes out a short breath and urges the civilian towards the alleyway before she rushes over to the man helping her. ]
Thanks- we're almost there...
[ She'll be on the look out for any long sticks she can grab along the way- eager to find anything that can be changed into an effective weapon.
This would be so much easier if Kingo or Thena were here... ]
all good! also wow just noticed I changed format lmao so sorry... autopilot >.>
Almost there is good, he doesn't like the chances of them being able to keep other people safe the longer they're in a populated area. The creature rights itself after a few seconds of dealing with the plastic prop, and V's optics widen as he checks on the woman's progress and then splits off to run round the other way to the shoreline. ]
Time for a beach vacay.
[ A little commentary for his own benefit, and he's wildly looking around for his new ally as he breaks out onto the sand. Where is she? ]
to be perfectly honest, i didn't even notice! XD <3
Sersi notes that he splits from her and heads a different way to the shoreline- but she's quick to get back within eyesight of him, now with a bundle of sharp looking sticks in hand that she picked up along the way.
She's really only given a moment to catch her breath with a small wave to the man to assure him she's there and ok before she looks around for where the deviant has gone... and immediately gets tackled by it with a shriek.
Most of those sticks have left her hand, but the ones left she quickly turns to metal and sticks one horizontally in its mouth to keep it from getting her. This is it- this is the one she'd turned into a tree back home. Up close like this, she recognizes its design... and that it targeted her instead of anyone else.
No biggie, just grappling with a creature she thought was dead on the sand of the beach. As one does. ]
lmao I noticed when I went back to reread and was like WHOOPS
[ Swerving towards where the woman's now wrestling the creature in the sand, V's brain is cycling through his options as fast as he can come up with them, all at a full pelt sprint. He's yet to figure out what's holding its mouth open, but it seems a good enough reason to act now.
Launching himself onto its back, his organic hand grips into a stripe of what he can only understand as a ridge of muscle, both knees squeezing into its sides. His cyberware hand instead reaches over the top of its head, fingers hooking firmly into the top of its snout and pulling it back, as though he's forcing it to look up at the sky.
Mostly he just wants to cause enough of a distraction so the woman can crawl out and do whatever it is she meant to do leading it down here. ]
no subject
She doesn't have the extra power from the Emergence to fall back on now. She's certain that she can't create a tree from the creature again- she's going to have to think like Thena or Ikaris. There's the perk that this man helping her is strong, stronger than she is... so when she catches sight of a piece of driftwood from the corner of her eye, she's quick to run that way- turning it to iron the moment her fingertips touch it. ]
Let it chase me... grab this and drive it through the top of its head.
[ The suggestion is breathless and she's only... vaguely... second guessing herself. But the deviant won't attack him- he'll be able to get to the crude weapon and hopefully catch up with her again in time to save her. ]
no subject
Rolling away from it, V's expecting for it to turn around and try take his head off, but it doesn't. There's a moment where it just snarls, its attention on his new friend in the distance. The moment ticks into the next and it launches itself forward, barreling towards the woman he's teamed up with and he scrambles to his feet in pursuit. ]
Incoming!
[ He yells as his cyber-enhanced legs carry him with speed that's definitely above and beyond what humans can normally hit. ]
Toss it upward!
[ He adds, optics calculating the trajectory he'd have to jump to catch the makeshift weapon - he'll ask about that later - and slam it through the creature's head. ]
no subject
She does have to slow down a little in order to look behind her and nod at him. Up.
She takes a deep breath and tosses the makeshift weapon upwards- hoping that he'll catch it before she inevitably gets tackled again... He's trusted her this far, she has to trust that he knows what he's doing as well. ]
no subject
When the weapon sails up into the air he's ready, every piece of cyberware he has honed in and focused on making this count. Launching himself forward to intercept with a burst of energy, he's acutely aware of the beastlike creature launch itself at the woman again. Whatever it has against her, he'd like to find out. Though not before they've successfully put down the threat.
With both hands wrapped around the metal, his descent towards the creature's back feels like it's in slow motion, optics feeding him the visual input from below. He just needs to strike before it can, and as his feet connect with its back he stabs downward. ]
no subject
Thank goodness that worked.
[ She thought it would- assumed it would... but she's never been entirely confident in her abilities. ]
Thank you... I'm sorry I sort of roped you into helping with that.
