[When Jinx says she's having trouble sleeping, Maul immediately rouses himself to pay closer attention. It was never a sign of anything good when people couldn't sleep in Trench. It always led to something really bad happening. But he doesn't tell the girl that. All he says is:]

Is this a normal fear that you have? Or is it being caused by something in particular?

[He's trying to narrow down if this is a Jinx-only thing or might possibly have a Trench origin.]

That doesn't sound good. This place has a bad way of making people unable to sleep sometimes. Are you seeing anything unusual? Monsters, weird animals, things of that nature?

( this is a hard question to answer for her. hallucinations is something jinx experiences on a regular bases for several years now. one would think they'd be use to it by now, but... )

not out of the ordinary.

( tonight, she hadn't seen any of those chalk-like monsters, mylo, claggor, or vander so it's safe to say this has nothing to do with them. )

I'm going to come over. Take a look around and make sure there's nothing skulking about.

[If there was something affecting Jinx like one of Trench's monster, there was a chance it didn't even need to be close to her in order to cause torment. Maul yawns, pulls back on the clothes he'd tossed to the floor when he went to sleep, and heads out.]

I've got other ways of sensing things through the Force you're not capable of. I'll be over soon.

[He soon arrives at Jinx's treehouse, bundled up in the cold and alert despite being woken up out of sleep. He knocks on the door. When Jinx answers, he says:]

Let us see what we can find around here, shall we?

( ah, that's right. maul has this thing called "the Force", although she isn't entirely sure what that entails. something to do with his blood magic or his own arcane talent? either way, she doesn't reply back to his message but does a little cleaning up since company is coming over.

when he arrives, jinx opens the door then steps aside -- nodding to give him an okay for him to search around. and while he does, she will simply follow behind him like a small dog would do to an owner when they're moving about in the home. )

[Maul lets his senses move outwards as the Force flows through him. He walks slowly through the treehouse, keeping his eyes open as well as his extrasensory perceptions. He goes through the house twice to make sure he's not overlooked anything before he's satisfied he's done his best. Then he turns to Jinx.]

I can't sense anything out of the ordinary but I've got a bad feeling regardless.

[He knows that there have been other months in Trench and Deerington where not being able to sleep led to bad things. He used to just shrug it off when his fellow Sleepers had bad nights but not any longer. He cares about Jinx and so he's going to trust the instincts here that tell him something is still amiss.]

Perhaps I should stay for a while.

Oh, sure! That hits the mark with me. — I gotta lotta space for you to crash if you need to.

( he can either take the couch or her bunk bed (she sleeps on top). with a light bounce in her step, jinx clasps her hands behind her back with a big grin on her face. )

Feel free to make yourself at home. And I promise nothin' around here is booby trap. ( ... ) Today.

How very comforting to know.

[He says dryly as he settles on the bottom bunk, wrapping a blanket around his upper half to keep himself warm. He pulls out his Omni and starts scanning the device for any new books that might have been uploaded in the past few weeks. Maul's a voracious reader and he might as well do something while he's waiting to see if doom will strike here.]

( it is very comforting to know, thank you! like a kid, jinx scurries over to climb up to the top bunk and settled in, too. there's a lot of squeak and slight movement up there before she peeks down to him.

her long braids now dangling when she looks to him (upside-down); eyeing his omni device.)

You gotta bug some people on the network tonight? I bet some of us are still awake.

Not tonight. I'm going to settle down with a good book.

[Maul's a huge bibliophile even if some here think of him as being an idiot.]

Sure!! But don't give me a wussy bedtime story. It's gotta have guts, blood, and someone gettin' axed with the skin meltin' off their bones.

( she swings back up; disappearing in the top bunk to get more settled in her blankets. )

[Maul thinks for a moment as he tries to find a tale that fits such requirements.]

How does a tale of someone slowly getting sliced in half by a bladed pendulum while fending off rats that are trying to eat him sound?

Sounds like my kind of story. Lay it on me, Horns!

( and she will even shut her eyes all snuggled in tight so she can imagine the characters and the gore. )

[And that's how Maul ends up reading The Pit and the Pendulum from a collection of Edgar Allan Poe stories to Jinx to help her fall fast asleep.]
