for break
And part of that is being fully aware of all possible threats around them.
It helps when the alternative is spending the month attending the parties at the Snake Den. Sure, she'll do that one or twice with people like Ruby and Break, but after how utterly sociable it made her last year, Ange is fine with keeping it to a pair of visits at best and then setting out to explore instead.
Not that she's just going to leave like that though. Ruby is coming with her, so there's no need for her to sit down with her wife about it, but there is one person she absolutely has to visit before going.
Especially when she has no clue how long of a journey it'll be, and-- well, she'll miss Break in the meantime. Even when she can just (hopefully) call him even across that distance.
It's how Ange ended up at Break's place, sitting at the table while the man is serving them some tea with snacks. As Break is pouring the tea, Ange has already grabbed hold of a cookie, chewing on a tiny bite before swallowing and speaking up, already having brought up the topic of her traveling to the other city and now adding: ]
Anyway, hopefully it shouldn't be a ridiculously young journey. If it feels like we're not really going anywhere, I'll just turn around and head back instead.
no subject
[Always the sensible kid in the midst of wild protagonist nonsense, Ange. It's one of the things Break most appreciates about her. Of course he still worries — he's frowning somewhat as he finishes pouring the tea and sits down across from her — but after knowing her so long, he knows Ange doesn't get involved in Trench's shenanigans for the sake of adventure and excitement. Rather, it's because she's nosy and likes to investigate things, and she actually knows stupid when she sees it.]
I'd heard a little about it before. Truthfully, I did think of going along too, for a moment or three. This is exactly the sort of business I'd have followed after at home, when I was the only adult available to chase the kids properly. But with so many who have so much experience attending and my blood powers still not quite under control, I imagine it's best that I remain here.
[Break is still getting scolded off and on by various loved ones for collapsing after his little stunt at the Sleeper Farm a couple months ago. In all the ensuing bickering it's become very clear that he will not hesitate to overdo it that much again if he feels a need, and this is just what he's like. The only sure way to prevent it is to keep him out of that sort of situation in the first place.
Is it the scolding that has him seeing sense now? Is it the nagging sense of guilt that maybe he should be kind enough to stop making everyone around him worry, and the desire to keep them safe by not allowing himself to become a liability? Sure, but mostly it's the memory of how mortifying it was when he collapsed at Sablier, far from home, and Gil had to go carrying him around in front of everybody. He has this horrible mental image of Ruby or somebody going around with his unconscious body slung casually over one shoulder in the middle of some abandoned horror city, and quite frankly if that ever happened he would probably have to squid himself and go back to the ocean where no one could look at him.
Priorities.]
no subject
That does seem like the best idea.
[ Not that she'd stop him if he did want to come along, mind you. After all, Ange would be there as well, and she wouldn't feel as fussy about it if she knew that she'd be there to help look after him if something did happen. And though there's a faint fussiness about leaving him here in the city and being so far away from it, that's more due to the sense of intense protectiveness over everyone she knows that's been nagging her for a while now more so than any logical reason.
This city ought to be safer, after all. Sure, Trench still has some dangers, but Break has proven that he can deal with those. Ange trusts him enough to deal with those, and to be alright once she returns here. ]
Ruby and I will be going together, anyway. So we'll be able to keep an eye on each other.
[ Sure, they may be young, people who technically have only just left their teenage years - but it's not like they're weak, or inexperienced with this stuff. Ange knows Break knows as much as well, which is why she knows she can let it be left unsaid, instead silently understood between them as she grabs her cup of tea, holding it between both of her hands to warm them up a little. ]
I'll make sure to call you too, as long as the Omnis keep working over that distance. [ There's never any telling. ] Because I..
[ ...
She's not going to say 'would miss you otherwise', even though it's the truth.
You can't make her!! Nuh-uh!! ]
.. I want to keep you updated.
[ Nailed it. ]

for hakkai
First he wonders if it's a hangover, but he's always careful enough with his drinking in this place to make sure he doesn't end up in that position. But as his body starts feeling worse and worse, Daniel realises that he's just outright getting sick. Food poisoning from the party? Something in the air - or blood - this month? Something else?
He has no idea. But the truth is that he doesn't have time for it. Not when he stayed behind in the city on purpose to keep the dojo open for the kids (and adults) who need it, not when he has so much to be alert about. There's no time to just lie sick in bed by himself. He'd just feel miserable.
So Daniel does what he does best. Repress it, just keep going, pretend nothing is going on. Just let Hakkai come over to share dinner together, just keep smiling and breathing. He can do that. He's a car salesman, smiling and trying to act normal when he feels anything but is his speciality.
So nothing really seems up right now either, not while Hakkai is busy with the cooking and Daniel is lingering in the kitchen to strike up friendly conversation, not wanting the other to just work on this by himself when Hakkai could have company. (When Daniel likes the company, especially when some of his students who usually hang around aren't in town right now.) ]
What are you making?
[ Y-You know, just casually asking that! Just some simple conversation, nothing going on here. ]
no subject
[Especially with so many in the city falling ill after the party.]
[Jeep is the one who first notices Daniel. He's in his usual perch on Hakkai's shoulder, curled around his neck like a scarf - and trills when he notices Daniel step into the kitchen.]
I thought a soup would be suitable. It will keep very well - and should be easy enough on those who aren't feeling well right now.
[He looks up, pointedly, over the rim of his monocle. Then drops his attention back to the potatoes he's peeling.]
The kettle should be ready in a few moments as well. An herbal blend. There are clean mugs in the cabinet.
no subject
Daniel hums, and then does wander over to grab some clean mugs, just so they're ready when the kettle is.
It also gives him a moment to think - it feels a little heavier nowadays, which clearly is not because he's sick, nuh-uh, he's functioning just fine, thank you!!! - before he's standing at the counter again, now with two mugs in hand. ]
Are there that many people sick across town?
[ Apparently Daniel hadn't noticed yet. Sure, maybe one or two people he knows, and.. then he himself, but he hadn't quite noticed it was enough of a trend that Hakkai would base this entire cooking session on it. ]

for terry
He doesn't recognize the place he finds himself in at all, after all. At first he thinks it might be mister Miyagi's place - the yard out back looks similar, after all, but that would be an awkward place for him to wake up at for at least umpteen reasons at this point - not to mention that there seems to be absolutely no one in the house.
No one but Daniel, after all.
And even the streets outside look weird. No part of this place looks like the Valley, and as panic threatens to overtake the boy, he instead decides to look through the house for absolutely any clue what's going on here.
.. a clue like a note. A note with an address. It doesn't say what the address is for, but it's just about the only thing he's got going on here, so Daniel grabs the paper with him and leaves, wandering the streets of Trench for a while to try and find the location on the note. It takes a while, considering the boy is completely unfamiliar with these streets, but he persists for just long enough to see it leads to a house.
And even if he doesn't know whose house it is-- what else to do but knock, right? So he reaches up to knock on the door, waiting for someone to respond or come out, in the hope he'll at least find some answers, or maybe a familiar face.
It's not like Daniel knows that note was left from when Terry invited Daniel over for dinner, after all. So he has no idea that the person who could answer the door is Terry.
Terry, who will find a much younger Daniel in front of his door if he decides to open. A Daniel who looks practically as old as he did when they met, wearing clothes that look just a little bit too big on him. (Look - a spare set of Robby's clothes is all he could find in his size around the house.) A Daniel who is young enough that he has an even harder time keeping emotions off his face, making it very clear he's feeling confused even though he's trying to cope with standing all by himself outside of this door, unsure of who will open it. ]
no subject
Danny boy?
[ Emphasis on boy, because - wow, he's just like he was thirty years ago. He has no idea why, but chalks it up to the magic of this place.
Terry, on the other hand, looks quite different than the last time this version of Daniel would have seen him. Most noticeably with his now appropriately silver hair. But his stature, his smile, and the intense look in his eyes remain the same. It's still unmistakably Terry. ]
Come in, come in, you'll catch a cold out there. [ He doesn't know if this Daniel remembers Terry's betrayal or not, so he defaults to looking kind and concerned. ]

for jinx + scorpia
Still, it's Chizuru who first calls out: ]
I'll get it..!
[ -- as she's heading towards the door. Granted, maybe Scorpia is trailing after her all the same as Chizuru moves over to the door, opening it to find Jinx on the other side-- who isn't looking like she's doing too great. If it wasn't for that fact, Chizuru wouldn't find it so weird for the other to stop by, since it's not like she's never done so before, but it's the other's look that gets Chizuru to pause for a moment, freezing up in surprise.
Only for a moment, anyway, before she's already calling out to Scorpia so the other won't get worried that something may have happened: ] I-It's Jinx! She came over!
[ Though Chizuru is quick to turn back towards Jinx, worry in her eyes and reaching out to put a hand on the other's arm. ]
Jinx, are you-- is everything okay? You should come inside quickly..!
no subject
this state of mind is the most dangerous for jinx. because in this condition, it's when horrible things tend to happen regarding her. sometimes it leads to her hurting or killing others without grasping her notions until it's too late. so her omen is here as a guide -- her little service animal which had always been his prime duty (not fighting). he is sitting on the other shoulder of jinx and when chizuru touches her arm, the pigtailed girl blinks rapidly as if to bring her back to the "now" than... wherever she was just now. )
She's sick and detached from herself right now.
( he will even tap on his own temple to further explain what he means by "detachment". )
If you like, I can teach you what to do whenever this happens.
( to chizuru and scorpia since they are both important to jinx. and as much he is aware his sleeper wants to appear she is mentally sound, she isn't. anyone with eyes and ears would know the truth. but he hopes one day jinx will come to realize that it's okay and it's nothing to be ashamed of to admit it. )

for dadniel
It's not the kind he can hide behind text for, either, as tempting as it was to bring up during his trip to the other city (unfortunately, he can't just 'ok' his way out of this one). It's been sitting in him for a while, where he's just wanted to blurt it out at Mister LaRusso, get it over with, but he always knew that it wouldn't start and end with the question; it would keep going, a rising upset leading possibly into anger, frustration, and more questions that it's unlikely his sensei would have the answers to.
Because everything he wants to know should come from his dad, but--but Robby doesn't want to talk about it again with him right now. Everything feels too precarious between them, and he doesn't want explanations that sound like excuses in his ears.
(It's difficult, accepting reasons for why your own dad has died four times.)
So Robby visits, on the first day back to training for him. He can feel himself already wanting to avoid it as he hesitates on which way to enter, choosing the side gate instead of the entrance as normal, his omen going in to find Mister LaRusso to announce their presence. He hangs around outside the doors of the inner dojo, but again crosses the threshold--of the building, and his reluctance--and takes off his shoes at the entrance.
(Would he need to? he wondered. It's not like it needs to be a long conversation. A yes or no, and that's it--what else is there to talk about? Nothing. It's not like they can change anything.)
He waits inside, flipping the light switch on for the room; breathing as he's been taught to do, pretending to have his interest on one of the bonsai in the room than on the door that his sensei's likely to come through.
no subject
If Robby looks up from the bonsai at all, he may notice the Omens trailing after Daniel - lead by the shisa, of course - as the tiny ball of fluff seems to have picked out a spot for them to cuddle in the corner of the dojo, waiting for Robby's Omen to sit down so the smaller Omen can snuggle right up against him.
Daniel isn't paying attention to the dogs' shenanigans, though. His gaze seems to be entirely aimed at Robby, a smile on his face that's definitely born from the fact that he's just so glad that they're back to the usual. Robby came back from that other city, seemingly not hurt or traumatized after other encounters he's been part of, and now he's here again to train.
Everything is as normal as it'll ever be in Trench again, Daniel thinks, completely unaware of the question hanging in the boy's mind.
"I bet it's going to look real nice once it does, though."

for chizuru
There's nothing better to do than sleep, but tell that to his brain: it's currently in the process of telling him that he's a fucking moron, and this is what he gets when he trusts in the shadiest fucking people, and believing in Tory, he thought he knew her better than that?
(Maybe this is his luck, girls that break his heart. Or just the worst luck with love imaginable, given his track record thus far. People who'll never really want him, or think that little of his family.)
He wants to wallow in his grief, he does that well, but there's another part of him that knows he should distract himself. Not the network, he'll pass on that. He checks the time, and it's late, but not too late.
And he remembers a promise, a friend, and Robby deliberates his next move, so easy to avoid talking at all (he does that well, too), but:
Chizuru receives a message. ]
hey
u still awake
?
no subject
And in a dark room it becomes fairly obvious when you have been sent a message through these devices. The girl watches it light up, and she curiously shifts until she's in a position to grab the Omni, blinking in surprise when she sees the name and the message visible on it.
At least the name attached to it means that she doesn't hesitate a moment before she's already sending a message back. ]
yes
what is it robby
is something wrong
?
[ Technically he could just be sending her a regular message. It's not like they don't talk a lot like this. And it's not even that Chizuru suspects something might be up, it's just--
Well, she's just always the type to ask this. ]

Robby didn't wake up noticing his blood effects right away--and admittedly, early on, he still hasn't. Will he? It's easy for February to start and to rationalise the urge he had to buy Tory flowers: it's her birthday on the 14th, she's been talking about celebrating his birthday, and why would he want to spoil her?
Things changed there. But Tory wasn't the only one he wanted to give gifts to, show his appreciation. And visiting Daniel LaRusso often, and then living with him leaves Robby plenty of opportunities to just... put things around without a word.
Such as... ]
1st gift
You know what Daniel LaRusso is, or was? A businessman. A suit-and-tie wearing businessman, and Robby doesn't personally know many of those. It's seeing a shop showing suits and also ties, and they catch his eye, remind him of the man. Back when he would see him at LaRusso Autos. And sure, he wears a button shirt and all that here, still...
Well then, a tie is perfect, isn't it? One in a shade of blue.
Robby leaves it curled up in a bag in one of the drawers of the living room. Mister LaRusso might not notice it right away, but that's okay. ]
2nd gift
Come on, he's rich. Not a millionaire, but he wasn't doing badly back in the Valley at all, with a business offering luxury autos. So that means those fancy shops with the nice tinned treats and drinks.
Like a tea selection*. Robby doesn't know a lot about tea, but it's easier to get than coffee, and these small tins? He can just slip them into a cupboard in the kitchen.
(*Literary naming not included.) ]
3rd gift
Why is that in the cupboard with your flour? Weird. ]
4th gift
But hey. That's if you even notice them! Who looks at the floor in their closet? ]
5th gift
Which means--whoa, is Daniel's spice rack topped up? Yes, but not by any strange amount. ...however, if he looks in one of the cutlery drawers, he'll find extra bottles of spices--some he may or may not know doesn't go for little. Is that saffron?? And pure vanilla?
Someone's got a five-finger discount. ]
another gift!!
our playground!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn't feel like he's returning anywhere. Rather, it feels like to Robby that he's running, much like he did after the school fight. Or maybe it's closer to when he had nowhere to go after juvie, and went to Miyagi-do to have somewhere to sleep for the night. Going to a place to avoid everyone, because dealing with people isn't going to bring him any relief.
And Miyagi-do always feels like that place he can go for safety.
Because Robby doesn't go to Mister LaRusso's house directly, but uses the side gate to go into his dojo instead. Trying to avoid the talk he'll eventually need to have with the man after everything they've already gone through, and it's already late. Robby's had time to cool off most of the hurt he's been carrying without extinguishing it, and talking more just seems like a waste. Why bother? He'll burst if he keeps at it, and that's a funny thing for a guy who feels so hollow.
So he's quiet, as he makes his way through the garden and entering the back of the dojo. As he slides the doors, sits in the darkness, uses his bag to rest his head. Part of him suspects to be found, but he isn't waiting for it.
But eventually, he won't try to hide it when he sends Mister LaRusso a text: ]
tory already knew
can i borrow your spare room for the night
[ He'll admit it, soon--much sooner than anyone else has anything. ]
no subject
It's hard for someone so dad-like to not worry about a kid who's obviously dealing with a lot right now, after all. Even when said kid isn't around. He's even thinking about it as he's doing the dishes, only pausing when his Omni lets him know that he's got a new message.
He dries his hands off to take a look, but as he's halfway through the message, Daniel suddenly notices something else - his tiny Omen, zooming across the house as if he's suddenly gotten a second wind this late in the evening. Except the zooming starts looking intentional after a few moments, and Daniel understands the creature enough at this point to know the dog wants him to follow.
So he does. Over to the back of the house, towards the indoor dojo, and as he slides open the door - the Omen for once dutifully waiting at Daniel's feet, rather than moving to pounce the figure sitting there in the dark - he spots a figure he probably should have expected to see here.
So many thoughts go through the man's mind, but as he puts his Omni away, the thing that first comes out of his mouth is just a soft: ]
.. Robby.
[ There's concern in his tone, reflected in Daniel's gaze, and he moves over to the boy without bothering to turn on the light. Rather than awkwardly standing there and hovering over him, the man kneels down in front of the other.
A part of him wants to ask why Robby didn't just use the front door, or why he didn't come to him right away rather than sitting here by himself, but Daniel lets the questions die on his tongue. They're not important.
Instead the worry in his eyes moves into a more frowny sort of concern as he asks: ]
She knew?
[ Sure, Daniel knew Tory knew Maul. She's spoken about the guy before, and his efforts to be.. 'better.' But Daniel figured it was since the girl didn't know what Maul was really like. That she probably saw later on the network at some point what kind of stuff he talks about and brags about, and dropped him like a rock - especially since she hadn't mentioned the man since.
But did she really know? All along? ]

Backdated to November: Do you wanna dust some zealoooooooots?
Which is to say, he is being obnoxiously overprotective of his kids, and keeps manifesting as though summoned any time one of them wants to go anywhere with aggressive offers to "keep them company".
Baltus gets away with this because he is dog-shaped, so it's cute when he sticks close to the side of some beloved person and when he trots along to scout for trouble you could easily think he's snuffling around for a snack. On Break it feels a lot more like dealing with a stuffy Victorian chaperone watching like a hawk to ensure that you don't get up to any scandalous naughtiness, for instance letting a boy with wicked thoughts catch a glimpse of your sinful, sinful ankle. But he means well, and given that the reality of the situation is cultists kidnapping people in order to torture and kill them on behalf of a local god-figure, perhaps he can be forgiven for insisting that nobody go out alone even if it's only a quick run to the corner store.]
It's too quiet on this street. Don't you think so?
[...he can be forgiven, but also, it is pretty annoying.]
no subject
And while it can manifest in some more extreme forms, this one is pretty mild. It just means that she absolutely doesn't mind the man deciding to tag along with her whenever she wants to go somewhere this month, even though Ange certainly would be bothered if some other people tried to do the very same thing. It'd go paired with a lot of eye rolling and deadpan remarks about how she's not a little kid, that's for sure.
She may still poke fun at Break a little - especially when Ange entirely realises what he's doing here, no matter how smooth he may be trying to be about it. But she allows him to accompany her each time all the same. Even when it's multiple times a day. Even when it gets a little overly fussy.
It's not like the girl minds when she does enjoy Break's company, anyway.
(And when she enjoys a good fluffy noodle hug with Baltus.)
Still, between the two of them, it's definitely Break who seems more on edge as they wander out here. It'll take months for Ange's paranoia levels to reach their high levels, after all, and right now she's mostly still coming off the high of the wedding bliss from late last month.
It's why her hum sounds rather casual too when it escapes her mouth in response to his question. ]
People probably don't want to go out much this month. [ It doesn't sound totally unconcerned, but it does sound like a very logical and calm answer. ] Somewhere between the Tower loving to make people get lost in town and the zealots, it's not exactly a fun month to be casually wandering around.
[ Surely even the townsfolk must understand that, Ange thinks. ]
