(open) miyagi-do gathering for new & existing students!
Who: You, you, and you!
What: For members of Miyagi-do, those interested in Miyagi-do, and whoever else might end up there! (Visiting a friend, etc)
When: Some time first half of month.
Where: At Miyagi-do Dojo in Crenshaw!
MIYAGI-DO: A NEW DAY (AN APRIL LOG)
Miyagi-do has seen some unexpected activity in the last few weeks, but has also--fortunately--seen a return to normality. An upgrade, even, where the damage sustained after a student's accidental explosion caught parts of the dojo in the ensuing chaos now gone after hard work hired, with thanks to the builders and those who helped with funds.
Even the sensei of the dojo has recovered from his own injuries, welcoming students--old and potentials--to classes. Along with a few touch-ups to the dojo, there are other changes, new and old, that should be addressed:
And in his announcement for the start of April's lessons, Sensei LaRusso has a bracelet to share to those who want one, after he's explained what they are. They're ice-powered bracelets--not super powerful, but with proper training they can be used as a means of defence. Spread ice over the ground, freeze certain limbs to surfaces, or even use it to shroud an enemy's face just long enough to distract them.
Sensei LaRusso will show how to use the bracelets to manifest the ice, and Robby Keene will also help in demonstrations, as well as with students individually. Dummies and can be used as stationary targets, and are a great way to learn how to disappear the ice, too--especially if you want to focus on using them for actual living targets, which either Sensei LaRusso or Robby can help with (or, if you're really that into getting iced...!).
Feel free to make your own toplevels on this log, it's meant as a mingle for existing students and those interested in checking out Miyagi-do! You can hang around the snack table, practice some karate, meet the teachers (and food provider...), maybe try out the new fun ice bracelets or.. you know, you can always just hang out with Daniel's Omen. He's a good boy who will stop to get belly rubs from everyone. You can't reject him. Sorry if you sat down for three seconds and are now stuck with a dog on your lap. He will not move.

Even the sensei of the dojo has recovered from his own injuries, welcoming students--old and potentials--to classes. Along with a few touch-ups to the dojo, there are other changes, new and old, that should be addressed:
1. A (SEMI-)NEW SENSEIHe's been around for a month now, but here's your formal introduction to Miyagi-do's second sensei, Sensei Toguchi. Sensei LaRusso would have introduced him as a...not old, but dear friend from back home who has also learned from the school of Miyagi-do back in Okinawa. Skilled in the use of sais, you may find Sensei Toguchi a different kind of sensei from Daniel LaRusso. But we'll let you see that for yourself.
2. YOUR VERY OWN SNACK PROVIDERTruthfully, this is a figure who's been around the dojo since the start, doing exactly what he does now...but Daniel LaRusso would not be himself if he didn't take some time to introduce Hakkai to the class as the person who makes their snacks and refreshments. Because Hakkai deserves his thanks, and you cannot escape a dad man like Daniel.
3. ICE BRACELETS: A NEW FORM OF PROTECTIONMiyagi-do has always worked to help individuals with what it is they want out of the dojo. Sometimes, this can just mean having somewhere to meditate and to find comfort in your own body than to focus on the fighting aspect. But Miyagi-do always leans towards protection, and learning how to respond and to engage with danger. It works to help individuals learn how they can use their own powers in ways that they prefer.
And in his announcement for the start of April's lessons, Sensei LaRusso has a bracelet to share to those who want one, after he's explained what they are. They're ice-powered bracelets--not super powerful, but with proper training they can be used as a means of defence. ENDING NOTESThis log covers the first lesson of April, as well as continuing forward if you want to add extra days and lessons! Please familiarise yourself with what Miyagi-do teaches. Newcomers are welcomed, and there will always be a place to get food and drink...thank you, Hakkai.
Feel free to make your own toplevels on this log, it's meant as a mingle for existing students and those interested in checking out Miyagi-do! daniel larusso - ota!
( a. general help )
[ Maybe there's something on your mind. If it shows enough on your face, you will definitely have Daniel approaching you - or maybe it's just because you're new to the dojo and checking things out, which will end up with the same thing. Daniel approaching, a very amicable smile on his face as he offers: ]
Anything I can help you with?
[ Just look at this man. He looks So Ready to help. ]
( b. ice practice help )
[ Or maybe you've grabbed one of the ice bracelets and you're still struggling a little. It's only natural, really - Daniel arrived here with this power already inside of his blood, and it still took him a good while until he stopped accidentally freezing everything around him. If you've asked him for help with it, then Daniel will gladly and patiently run through this with you, standing in front of you with a smile. ]
Alright, so it's very important to stay calm for this. If you get too worked up, it's easy for the entire ice business to get out of hand. [ Trust him, this is a man speaking from experience.. ] Can you take a calm, deep breath?
[ He'll wait. ]
( c. resting )
[ Really, Daniel is pretty much healed. He is - for once - not faking it, nor really pushing himself, considering he did have quite a few weeks and some magical help to fully rest and heal up after what happened to him.
But despite the fact that his back is no longer broken, a few weeks of mostly lying around in bed do take a lot out of a guy, especially at Daniel's age. He has enough energy to help out plenty of people during the lesson with talking and karate practice and ice power practice, sure, but-- after a while? He has to sit down on the backsteps that lead to the inside dojo, letting out a deep breath as he does so.
Anyone can find him sitting there, his puppy Omen on his lap, getting the belly scritches the creature so thoroughly desires. Daniel will look up if anyone approaches, giving them a smile that's only a little tired around the edges. ]
So, how's the first proper lesson in a while, huh? Worth the wait?
B
Chrollo will play whatever role he needs to play, and this one is familiar. Novice. It's true with blood magic, but blood magic is so similar to nen in many ways.
He takes a deep, calming breath as instructed.]
I wouldn't have guessed you were an icy coldblood. What kind of getting worked up makes it the worst?
[Sensei LaRusso comes across as very warm and open. But perhaps he has the kind of temper that runs cold and slow? Or maybe there's some other aspect of Daniel that would fit better with ice.]
no subject
It seems like the situation he's refering to ended up well though, since the man doesn't seem too bothered by the thought of it, instead lightly shaking his head with a near-amused huff. ]
I just want to make sure no one here accidentally does that to themselves. [ Even if Daniel could thaw them out. It still wouldn't be a pleasant experience to have, he imagines.
He's still thinking about the stranger's words for a moment though. Sure, he's got other stuff to ask Chrollo, but-- this is kind of interesting enough to ask first. ]
You think there's something about people though that determines their powers?
[ Honesty, he's mostly interested because he's been having so much trouble getting any of the other elements to work for him.. So if there's some Trench lore surrounding this he's still missing, he's interested. ]
no subject
[Chrollo takes another calming, deliberate breath before he pauses to consider how to answer Daniel's question. When he speaks it's hesitant and without much of his usual certainty.]
I do think that, but there are probably exceptions.
[There are nen users with the misfortune of preferring a category they're naturally weaker in, after all. A mismatch between personality and power.]
The elements a coldblood can use are, at least where I'm from, metaphors for both positive personality traits and expressions of anger.
I haven't seen the others in use very much, so it's not much to go on.
[Chrollo adds the last part a little sheepishly.]
no subject
Though he's also aware there can be difference between the power here and the powers where others come from. Still, it doesn't mean he's ready to dismiss this thought entirely.
Especially when he has little else to go on when it comes to these powers. ]
I've been wondering about that, honestly. [ Daniel can even admit as much out loud. Not like it's weird for a guy from a totally normal world to know little about these powers. ] Ice is pretty easy for me by now, but whenever I try to use any others, there's just..
[ He makes a vague hand gesture as if to indicate 'nothing.' ]
Even though it sure would be convenient to be able to use more than one of those elements in a place as dangerous as this.
no subject
I can think of a few ways to approach the other elements, but without even knowing how ice works for you I don't think they would be much help.
I wouldn't recommend doing what someone where I'm from would need to do unless you find the idea of being repeatedly burned or shocked appealing.
(no subject)
c!
after all, he's pretty sure he'd just upset daniel if he punished himself. and daniel has enough troubles of his own without having to worry about that.
so he spends time back in the dojo, trying to help out. here it's bringing a cup of tea with him, because yes sensei, he noticed you looking a little tired. he came towards the end of the lesson and mostly stayed back, and now he's taking a seat next to daniel and offering him the cup.]
It was- well, I'm sorry I missed it. [he really is. even just coming towards the end made him realize sunny was probably right and he shouldn't avoid practice, even for robby. there was daniel to think of too.] I like Sensei Toguchi, he's an interesting person.
[this would sound like a backhanded compliment from most but here is mob, sincere as hell. chozen was the Dude of all time.]
no subject
Though, honestly, the true gift is Mob coming back to class after all. The way he had seemed so guilty at Daniel's bedside and the way he didn't show up right away said a lot, after all. Daniel even considered calling him if he didn't show up today, just to talk things over, but.. there Mob is. Maybe not quite at his usual level of participation, but he's here.
That by itself would've been enough to melt Daniel's heart, and the man reaches out a hand to lightly ruffle the boy's hair. ]
I'm just glad you're here now, bud.
[ Maybe a little more affectionate than before, but if the entire Mob incident taught Daniel anything aside from the fact that he needs to make some power contingency plans for the dojo, it's the fact that he's got to show these students the affection they deserve rather than waiting with it until it's too late.
He pulls his hand back to set it against his cup of tea again, taking a sip before addressing the rest here. ]
Interesting is a good word for him. [ He doesn't see a dig in it, really. Daniel is pretty sure Chozen would just laugh if he would be called interesting to his face.. He's just that sort of guy. ] I told you that he changed a lot, right? Now you can see it for yourself.
[ Since he's pretty different from the boy Mob got to see back in that memory. ]
no subject
[it's nice to just sit and look around though, only glancing back when daniel starts speaking on his karate cousin. interesting is an excellent word for him, it's true. ]
He doesn't seem so angry now. I guess he's had a lot of time to grow. [and whatever was going on in his life there is hopefully resolved.] He reminds me a little of my friend Hanazawa. He was really troubled too.
no subject
[ Which is very relevant to their current topic, sure, but.. Daniel does drop a tiny pause after it, like he's trying to make sure Mob thinks about it for a moment. Because it's not just applicable to the people they're talking about - but it also weaves directly into Daniel's view on the entire Mob incident, the very reason why he'd never blame the boy, and sit here next to him like nothing ever happened, like forgiveness was natural. ]
And Chozen's teacher-- his uncle.. He was a good guy, but misguided. It took him a little too long to realise the error of his ways, and by then he had already taught Chozen a few things that were hard for him to unlearn. [ Though Chozen did unlearn them in the end, the end result of which is clearly visible to both of them.
It only makes the change more admirable. ]
Maybe the same thing counted for your friend. Maybe someone taught him to be that way.
no subject
so thank you grand sensei, for a thought that might get further consideration later and make him less likely to dismiss himself as stupid. still doing that good work.
(when it comes to how it reflects on the Incident well... he's not thinking about that. maybe that too will get some thought eventually.)
the rest gets a considering pause.] I see. Sensei Toguchi really is impressive. I mean, to become a sensei himself after that, I don't think a lot of people would. [after failing or having someone fail them that way.]
I think Hanazawa's problem is he didn't have anyone to teach him. I guess being alone is kind of a misguided teacher in its own way.

a whispered stop that at the offending bracelet (at himself, really. he's the problem, it's him), before he moves to sit - easier than it was months ago - not graceful by any means, just ...easy.]
It was ...interesting.
[no malice, but his smile's less tired now. so that's a yes. and his omen lets out a chuckle from mike's shirt pocket before peeking her head up and whispering: i got to be a dog!.]
no subject
Yeah, I think you had a little bit more fun with that lesson than most other Omens here. They're already dogs all the time. [ Case in point: Daniel's own little lap dog here.. But it's not like half his students don't have dog Omens either, so it's easy to make this light joke.
He gestures for Mike to reach out his hand, and if the other does, Daniel's fingers take a gentle hold of the other man's wrist to make the last remaining ice crystals melt away. It's a casual, friendly gesture, like Daniel is just comfortable enough with Mike to do this without making a big deal out of it. He even casually speaks up again at the same time. ]
I'm glad you got to meet Chozen. I know he seems kind of.. intense. [ Talk about an understatement, Daniel. ] But he's a great guy.
C
Sunny heads over towards the back steps, sitting down next to Daniel before he even says anything. He takes a moment or two to stare at the adorable puppy. He really liked the little guy.]
Yes, worth the wait. [He nods.] I'm glad that you're doing better now.
no subject
Though, right after he says it, the puppy on his lap shifts, as if it's trying to ask for attention. It causes Daniel to laugh, shaking his head as he adds: ]
Alright, alright. Three of us.
[ He buries his hands into the puppy's fur, fluffing it up, before the puppy hops on over to sit on Sunny's lap instead. ]
I'm glad even Shigeo came again. [ A sentiment Daniel is sure Sunny shares, hence why he can't help but bring it up. ] He seems happy to be here, don't you think?
no subject
Yeah. [He nods.] I don't think he ever wanted to stop coming to karate but- [There's a moment of hesitation, before he turns his head towards Daniel fully.]
There were some things that Robby said to him that made him not want to. [He furrows his brow.] He's been acting weird lately.
no subject
It slowly makes the smile disappear off his face, instead replaced by something much closer to surprise - or perhaps even confusion. His eyebrows move up, and when they come down, they knit together into a small concerned frown. ]
What.. do you mean?
[ He's not doubting Sunny here. Daniel has full trust in the kid, doesn't assume Sunny would just lie to him for no reason.
But even so-- the words don't make sense, to a point where Daniel wonders if he just heard them wrong. ]
What did Robby tell Shigeo?

his sensibilities seemed close to her own, so when she heard that there was going to be open training, Lexi had to at least try. she felt like she owed it to Sasuke to not let her skills atrophy.
even more importantly, she owed it to herself. she'd finally managed to gain full control over her darkblood powers, but she knew she couldn't always depend on them.
so when Mr. LaRusso asked her if she had anything she needed help with, she couldn't help feeling her cheeks warm in a blush]
Well, uh. I wanted to talk to you? About starting training at your dojo? I have experience, I'd been studying with Sasuke for a year so I'm not, like. Totally green? Is that...something you think you can help with?
no subject
[ There's faint surprise in Daniel's reaction. Nothing too over the top, since it would make sense that a face he hadn't seen before at the dojo might be here to want to join. But there have been some people joining in on the training today who weren't necessarily there with that exact same end goal, so it's still a slight surprise.
A pleasant one, though, and Daniel's raised surprised eyebrows quickly melt into a warmer expression instead, a welcoming smile. ]
Of course. We have students at all sorts of levels here at the dojo, especially since people tend to have such varying experiences in their own worlds. [ Even if you've never done karate necessarily, there's still a big difference between someone who's a literal superhero in their world and someone who's just an antsy teenager, Daniel has found.. ] If you would like to try out training here, we'd gladly have you.
[ There's a faint pause, but then Daniel adds: ]
I have to admit that I don't have much personal experience with his training methods. [ Sasuke's, of course. He's heard about them from Robby, but hearing about it and training in it yourself are entirely different things, Daniel knows that well. ] But we have at least one student here at the dojo who has also trained there, so maybe he could help you settle in a little bit?
no subject
and she wasn't about to walk in and start practicing. rude. so she was doing this by the book and that meant, formally asking per prospective sensei if he was willing to pick up her training.
at that smile, hers grew a little more relaxed]
Great! I mean, thank you. I'd...never done anything like this before I arrived. Never really had to, I was kind of a nerd. [she leans more towards the antsy teenager side of things, her world was almost painfully normal, all of its drama brought about by bad behavior and worse boundaries] And yes, I'd like to try.
Well, um, as you can see, I'm not exactly a physically imposing specimen. [a bad, self-deprecating joke? really, Lexi?] So we mostly focused on speed and precision, to let me end the fight fast or at least get away on my own terms. And I'll take any help I can get. Really. What's their name? And, um. If it's okay? I'd also like to talk to you. About your philosophy.
no subject
It's Robby-- that boy over here. [ Daniel even points him out, considering there are quite a few boys in the dojo's courtyard right now, either training or mingling among themselves. ] Feel free to talk to him in a few moments, I'm sure he'd love to talk to you.
[ Mostly in a few moments, because.. well, Lexi asked to talk to Daniel himself first, and who would he be to deny her that? He's already gesturing for her to come along, moving so they can sit on the nearby steps at the back of the house, just so they aren't having the entire conversation while standing.
But as soon as they're sitting down, Daniel easily speaks on, his tone amicable and calm. ]
Well, you can ask me anything you want, so feel free. Though it seems that you've already nailed a lot of the Miyagi-do philosophy in what you're saying here. My own teacher always taught me that karate is meant for defense only, to protect yourself and others, so that's what I'm also passing on.
[ There's some clear pride in the way he's telling it, though it's not pride turned inward. It's pride for his teacher, and pride for how well his students here seem to be picking up on these ideas. ]
It doesn't matter whether you're the biggest or strongest person around. I mean.. [ He laughs, gesturing at himself. ] Look at me.
[ Daniel doesn't exactly have huge buff arms or anything, after all. Quite the opposite. ]
Like you said, it's about being faster, or about being smarter. You don't need to be the person who can punch a monster the hardest in order to still be able to protect people.

general help (but with demons)
But otherwise, he's his usual Peter Self, perpetually a little shy but certainly comfortable here at the dojo. The incident with Mob struck close to home with him, and there's been an ache reserved in his heart for the younger boy (whom Peter has also been keeping a Worried Eye on, make sure he's doing okay). But things are going..... well. Moving forwards, and it's.... nice. It feels good; he's happy.
At some point, however, a certain demon begins to grow bored. It's not that Paimon dislikes it here, and the meditative focus calls to his spirit, is something he can appreciate. But now that Peter's actually joined an organisation, it means that he devotes more time to it, and Paimon is simply not used to his reclusive, depressed host actually leaving the house and doing things. And as the day goes on, the demon progressively gets more and more restless in his boredom. He wants to go home and see his witch, and there's a project in his mind that he wants to start working on, he has things to do.... but Peter is still here at The Karate.....
When Daniel approaches Peter, the boy is looking a little lost, standing there off to the side by himself, just kind of... gazing at nothing. That sort of behaviour isn't altogether out of character for Peter "Dissociative" Graham, but what happens next is.....well.
As soon as Daniel speaks to him, Peter, who is not much of Peter at all anymore, slowly turns his head to stare at the man, eyes wide and pupils kind of funny, too swollen. Paimon's never properly come face to face with Daniel, only ever peeked out at him from time to time. But right now he's a little agitated, and it's The Teacher that he'll take it out on...
Abruptly, he drops into a low crouch, long limbs bent at angles like some large spider there on the ground. Those black eyes flash up at Daniel, and he gives a sharp, spitting, hiss. It's not terribly aggressive (at least for Paimon.... this is mostly just him Expressing His Displeasure), although it's probably.... alarming..... )
no subject
.. but then things take a turn. A turn that's obvious enough for even Daniel to know what's going on here, despite never having seen the demon inhabiting Peter before. And it's not even like he's really seeing it now, but.. this behaviour sure can't be Peter anymore. If Daniel hadn't heard from the boy about the entire demon situation a few months back, he definitely would have had absolutely no clue what's going on here.
But this.. does scream 'stereotypical horror movie possession', right.. Like something straight out of The Exorcist..
The man takes a step back at the hiss out of surprise. There's a bit of fear, because.. god, despite knowing this was a possibility, Daniel wasn't actually prepared to deal with a demon. His shoulders move up, his body growing a touch more rigid, like he can't help but instinctively be ready to fight. (It's just what happens when you've been traumatized enough by people loving to suddenly attack you, okay.)
Though he doesn't take on any aggressive stance. Daniel's luck here may be that Johnny has always been the strike first type, not Daniel. He's certainly not looking to provoke a demon here.
And Robby had said Paimon can be reasoned with, right? M.. Maybe that's all he has to do here..??
Even though he's still wildly taken aback by seeing this behaviour in person now, but Daniel is trying to manage. Trying to be the responsible adult, calling out: ]
.. Paimon?
[ Please tell him he's not about to be jumped by a demon making Peter look like he's Spider-Man... He didn't account for this in his afternoon schedule.. ]
no subject
'Paimon?'
Paimon's name voiced aloud is always A Thing for him, an Important Thing, and it freezes him right there in place for a very long moment, certainly attentive to it. If there could possibly be any lingering doubts this isn't Peter.... the evidence is there, the demon hears its name and latches onto it.
.............And then he takes off running. Scrambling on all fours, an erratic, unnatural way to move, and fast in a way that shouldn't be possible for a human. He skitters off across the grass, moving across the dojo yard and....... right into Daniel's house nearby.
Sorry Daniel, this is certainly a thing that is happening.
And if the man follows the demon into his home....... he won't be anywhere in immediate sight. (Where did he go???? This is horrible!) )
no subject
Sure, you can expect anything from a demon, and yet Daniel wasn't expected at all for the being in Peter's body to instead scurry off into the opposite direction. So quickly too, even though Daniel is pretty sure no one would be able to move so quickly in that position. It's practically uncanny, and he would love to just leave this alone. If this was just some regular Trench creature, he'd just go home..
But there's two problems with that plan. First of all he isn't just dealing with some creature, but instead with something in the body of one of his students - one of the kids Daniel feels like he's got to keep an eye out for. And secondly..
.. well, he can't go home when that's exactly where the creature went.
So the only option is to chase Paimon. This is all happening too quickly to ask Robby or anyone else for help. Besides, Daniel is the responsible adult here. He's supposed to be able to handle this stuff, even if he feels incredibly out of his league.
So he follows. He runs into the house as well, turning his head to try and find where the demon has gone. He passes through the indoor dojo, the first room behind the door, and then further into the house..
It kind of feels like he's chasing a toddler, except incredibly more ominous than that. This being killed Johnny, after all. If Daniel isn't careful, maybe the same could happen to him, so he's making sure to move through the house with extreme caution, trying so hard to look for any sign of Peter.. ]
