MIYAGI-DO: A NEW DAY (AN APRIL LOG)

Miyagi-do has seen some unexpected activity in the last few weeks, but has also--fortunately--seen a return to normality. An upgrade, even, where the damage sustained after a student's accidental explosion caught parts of the dojo in the ensuing chaos now gone after hard work hired, with thanks to the builders and those who helped with funds.

Even the sensei of the dojo has recovered from his own injuries, welcoming students--old and potentials--to classes. Along with a few touch-ups to the dojo, there are other changes, new and old, that should be addressed:

1. A (SEMI-)NEW SENSEI

He's been around for a month now, but here's your formal introduction to Miyagi-do's second sensei, Sensei Toguchi. Sensei LaRusso would have introduced him as a...not old, but dear friend from back home who has also learned from the school of Miyagi-do back in Okinawa. Skilled in the use of sais, you may find Sensei Toguchi a different kind of sensei from Daniel LaRusso. But we'll let you see that for yourself.

2. YOUR VERY OWN SNACK PROVIDER

Truthfully, this is a figure who's been around the dojo since the start, doing exactly what he does now...but Daniel LaRusso would not be himself if he didn't take some time to introduce Hakkai to the class as the person who makes their snacks and refreshments. Because Hakkai deserves his thanks, and you cannot escape a dad man like Daniel.

3. ICE BRACELETS: A NEW FORM OF PROTECTION

Miyagi-do has always worked to help individuals with what it is they want out of the dojo. Sometimes, this can just mean having somewhere to meditate and to find comfort in your own body than to focus on the fighting aspect. But Miyagi-do always leans towards protection, and learning how to respond and to engage with danger. It works to help individuals learn how they can use their own powers in ways that they prefer.

And in his announcement for the start of April's lessons, Sensei LaRusso has a bracelet to share to those who want one, after he's explained what they are. They're ice-powered bracelets--not super powerful, but with proper training they can be used as a means of defence. Spread ice over the ground, freeze certain limbs to surfaces, or even use it to shroud an enemy's face just long enough to distract them.

Sensei LaRusso will show how to use the bracelets to manifest the ice, and Robby Keene will also help in demonstrations, as well as with students individually. Dummies and can be used as stationary targets, and are a great way to learn how to disappear the ice, too--especially if you want to focus on using them for actual living targets, which either Sensei LaRusso or Robby can help with (or, if you're really that into getting iced...!).

[One of the last times Johnny had come into the dojo. He had been about as uncomfortable as he could be in his own skin when it came to Robby and Daniel. That had actually improved over the last few months. Or at least he was doing his best to look like it had improved. There was still a hint of nervousness to it, but he had shown up on his own, without a disguise. Just in jeans and a plaid shirt, a duffle bag under his arm and a separate bag in the other.

He knew LaRusso had been in a rough spot and while there was concern about that, his main priority was his son. He wanted to make sure everything was going smooth- And the least he could do is actually show up to give some support.

...And maybe something else.

Which becomes more obvious when he shows up and hands the second bag over to Robby when he sees him.]

Hey. I uh... brought you some lunch.

Ham sandwiches. Or at least I think it's ham.

[ Robby's got a canteen for water, one of the things brought over with him when he showed up in Trench (the one thing that didn't feel gross to handle, being stuffed in a bag and coming from the sea--unlike his shoes and clothes). There's food he can get at any point, and he planned to, but sitting and getting his drink comes first.

...but also, so does his dad showing up, apparently.

He blinks, surprised by the arrival, a 'hey' given back to his dad's own before Robby looks at the bag with some curiosity...even after being told what it is. Maybe.

But...even if it is mysterious meat: ] ...Thanks.

[ Robby will take it, sit it on is lap with interest. He wants to ask if there's two (y-you know, not that he wants his dad to stick around), but he sees the bigger bag there. That curiosity wins out. ]

You dropping something off?

[Look Johnny wasn't exactly expecting Robby to take the packed lunch, or to thank him for it. Not really out of anything against his son, but he hadn't really done the packed lunch thing very much. He didn't know what to expect. So his smile is a little sheepish and he shrugs it off lightly.]

Uh- Yeah. Don't mention it.

[He looks down at the other bag and lightly fumbles with his lips before he answers.]

It's my gi- And shit. I didn't come here looking for a fight. But- I thought bringing it around just incase. You know- That would be good.

[ Dad.....is this you trying to be subtle about joining in or needing a gi to feel safe in Miyagi-do.... the question Robby needs to ask himself, and not actually come up with a good answer. Though, what seems reasonable to him is: ]

...You wanna ask Mister LaRusso or sensei Toguchi for a spar? [ Is that it. Is that what this really is. ] They won't think it's weird if you just ask.

[ So he figures, with a small shrug. But if that's what this really is--an older sensei just wanting to karate with someone that isn't a student--then Robby can encourage it by not sounding weird about it himself.

There's looking for a fight, and then there's just looking for people with a common interest. ...that happens to involve fighting. ]

[A little from column A, a little from column B. Mostly from Column A, but he still feels awkward about any sort of Miyagi Do and Cobra Kai- But now Eagle Fang drama that had happened back at home, or here. It still made him feel like a bit of an outsider.]

Yeah- Maybe. I didn't want to show up wearing it or anything though. I uh- Got some advise that showing up as me. You know, that was good enough.

[Look. Johnny was used to a lot bravado and being casual about things wasn't exactly his strongest suit.]

But not just them either. I was thinking if you're up for it, maybe we could go a round or two. Show me how you've been doing.

[strongroots]

[ ...well, this wasn't a situation Robby was expecting. He doesn't personally mind, a small pause before he goes ] Sure, [ though have a thought to look around for Sensei LaRusso, but--he would know his dad is here, right?

It's not exactly like last time either, with his dad showing up in his gi with Paul. So he quickly enough looks back to his dad. ]

...Mister LaRusso [ he would say sensei but it's kind of weird?? With his dad? Safer option right now ] introduced everyone to ice bracelets, um, so they can mix ice with their karate or setting traps to get away. 'Less you just want to see normal karate?

[ Like seeing how good a son is kind of karate?? ]

[It was a weird place for Johnny to be in too. And he'd be lying if he said he wasn't nervous as hell about doing this. But he was trying to do better, he was trying to be better. And sometimes that did mean doing what you nervous about.

He notices the look around- and well he does his best to ignore it for now.

He does blink briefly at the way Robby refers to LaRusso at this moment. And there is a moment where he raises a hand up.]

Hey. We're in his dojo, and you are his student. Pretty sure it's Sensei LaRusso right now.

[As much as Johnny would love for the chance to take a jab at Daniel. He was going to try and show some respect here. And he knew he'd have his students doing push ups on their knuckles for doing that in his dojo.

But his focus shifts onto the talk about bracelets. ...And well he's not surprised to about. The talk of powers and abilities have kept coming up, and he knows he's behind the game there.]

Why don't you show you me both. I want to see your karate. And well- if you're using the bracelets. Then that's a part of your style, right?

--Sensei LaRusso, [ Robby fixes, though it takes a beat, where he didn't expect to be called out on it, but. You fix a fix. Mister LaRusso probably wouldn't mind, but Robby has reason to care, ... even if he's technically taking a break right now. Does referring to a person as your sensei really matter on your break?

But it's what you would have done in Cobra Kai, too, and some things stick with you.

He's curious about where this is going to go; maybe with an uncertainty that he wouldn't have for anyone else, but even so: ] You wanna go now? You can get changed inside. [ and Robby will give him directions. ] I can eat when we're done.

[ Because. You know. Manwich in hand, drink next to him. But the sandwich is in a bag and he's got one he can put them both in until later. ]

[Johnny wasn't exactly looking to bust Robby's balls about it. He was- hyper aware of not disrespecting Miyagi Do while he was here. He was not going to repeat the same mistakes here.

Johnny considers his options briefly, before he does give a little nod.]

Yeah. Might as well get this show on the road. You know?

[He glances down at his bag then retreats inside to get changed. Returning shortly later wearing his red eagle fang gi on. He flashes a lame thumbs up.]
